apocalypse fiction contest
a farrago of dark futures

Winners announced in Apocalypse Fiction Contest

In early December, Furtive Labors editorial board members vetted the more than 40 short stories submitted to the Apocalypse Fiction Contest. A consensus was reached.

Alison Klesman's Pieces of Rock - in which two siblings aboard a spaceship gaze out a porthole at Earth's remains, a "jumbled conglomeration of rock and dust spread out over 40,000 kilometers along an orbit between Venus and Mars," wondering what the end must have been like - was the editors' top pick for its dark beauty and stinging nostalgia.

Editors also cottoned to the slam-bang seraphic swordplay of Lesleigh Force's Where Angels Tread and the crazed Lovecraftian undercurrents of Jacob Bayne's Hurry.

The contest began in late October and the entry deadline was Nov. 30. Submissions were limited to 500 words and needed to incorporate the theme of apocalypse in one form or another. The first-place winner received $20 and a gift bag of Furtive Labors literature.

The Apocalypse Fiction Contest was the first in a series of flash-fiction contests sponsored by Furtive Labors. Check back at furtivelabors.com for future contest listings. POSTED 12 DEC 08
